Pride rose from the ashes of the June 28, 1969, six-day Stonewall Riots in New York. The Stonewall Inn was an LGBTQIA+ bar on Christopher Street. Because homosexuality was illegal as was cross dressing, law enforcement often raided the inn and hauled “homosexuals” off to jail. Well, enough was a enough that hot night in late June, and people fought back. That fight spanned 50-plus years of gains for LGBTQIA+ rights.
As another pride season launches, corporations rainbow wash their outreach to the community; however, being an ally is more than an inclusive ad campaign. LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack all over the country with legislation in many states threatening our community.
That’s not to say allies are not important, but allies need to stand up in meaningful ways, like Disney in Florida combatting the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. Here’s a quick round up of LGBTQIA+ allies on Twitter:

A huge way to support the LGBTQIA+ community is to elect politicians who belong to the community or who are strong allies to the community:
An honor to join community leaders from the LGBTQ+ community and other allies to raise the Pride Flag in Niagara Square yesterday. Supporting LGBTQ+ rights has always been a passion of mine and I will be happy to bring that support back to the County Clerk’s office. pic.twitter.com/HmRuBK2ZUR

Quentin is one of the few politician allies to actually understand what it means to actually be an ally. He is the best ever person to run for statewide office on LGBTQ issues & I am so excited to be supporting him! #PRIDE #Pride2022 #PrideMonth #mapoli https://t.co/fIz9n6dmok

Pride Month, and its respective celebrations, are an integral part of our community. Now more than ever, it is necessary to act as allies and commit ourselves to uplifting and supporting LGBTQ+ voices.
